An amount you could owe during a coverage period (usually one year) for covered health care services before your plan begins to pay.
For example:
Jim has a plan with a $5,000 deductible. Jim falls while hanging lights and breaks his arm ,and receives a bill for $1,000. In this case, if Bill has no prior claims and bill would be responsible for the full bill of $1,000 until $5,000 is reached at which time there will be co-insurance that will apply.
