September 23, 2016

  • Medicare

Individuals may qualify for Part A and Part B if one of the following applies:

1. Already getting benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RFB)

  • In most cases, individuals will automatically get Part A and Part B starting the first day of the month they turn 65
  • If the birthday is on the first day of the month, Part A and Part B will start the 1st day of the prior month

2. Under 65 and have disability

  • People automatically get Part A and Part B after they get disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board (RFB)

3. Have ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease)

  • People automatically get Part A and Part B from Social Security or from the Railroad Retirement Board (RFB)

4. Live in Puerto Rico and get benefits from the Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RFB)

  • People automatically get Part A
  • If they want Medicare Part B, they need to sign up for it

People who get Medicare automatically will receive their red, white, and blue Medicare card in the mail 3 months before their 65th birthday or their 25th month of disability
