You can’t keep adding to a Health Savings Account (HSA) without limit. The IRS sets a contribution cap each year, and it includes anything your employer contributes.

2027 HSA contribution limits

Self-only coverageFamily coverage
Maximum contribution (you + employer)$4,500$9,000
Catch-up contribution (age 55 and older)+ $1,000+ $1,000

2027 requirements for an HSA-eligible health plan

Self-onlyFamily
Minimum deductible$1,750$3,500
Maximum out-of-pocket$8,700$17,400

To contribute to an HSA you must be covered by a qualifying high deductible health plan (HDHP) and generally cannot be enrolled in Medicare or claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.
