Does Medicare Cover Cataract Surgery?

Medicare Part B does cover cataract surgery. It also covers vision correction after cataract surgery, like contacts or glasses.

Part B leaves out one important factor, though – routine vision exams. Routine vision exams are not covered under Medicare Part B unless you are a high-risk individual. This can be problematic because it is one of the best ways to detect the need for cataract surgery or to identify and complications from it.

Considering 61 million adults in the United States are at risk for some form of vision loss, eye care is important, and increasingly so as you age. If you’ve read up on the parts of Medicare, you know that Part A covers your hospital insurance and Part B covers medical costs. But what vision care is included in that?

Medicare Part A will generally only cover vision expenses when it is a condition that is considered a medical problem. Cataract surgery is not covered under Part A.

So, what can you do?

While Part A and Part B provide some vision coverage, Medicare Advantage plans can also include routine eye exams. With Part B covering cataract surgery and your needs after it, you are still responsible for paying the coinsurance.

If you have questions about what is included in your Medicare coverage and what it means for conditions you have or procedures you need, learning more about the Medicare parts can help.
